Welcome to the Linux Stuff page

If you want to get a good undertanding about what the Linux alternative is, follow this link Here

Coolumrock dot net and it's hosted domains were constructed using only Free Opensource Softwares supplied with the Linux operating system running on my PC and they also reside on the Linux powered servers at Planetdomain.com

I download and use a variety of Linux distributions as they evolve and become available, because I have a curious interest in community based opensourced softwares as opposed to patented source, proprietory expensive ones. I've never been formally schooled or corrupted in "real computing" but I have managed to educate myself to the point where many people depend on my knowledge. I teach myself out of pure interest and hands on experience, probably the hardest way to learn as my builders sized wheelbarrow full of text books would testify. Growing senior in these exciting times of machinery and technology and watching it evolve right under my nose has spurred me on. I cosistently use Slackware Linux because I started out with that one back in the 90's and we are but creatures of habit.

The real beauty of Linux is that distributions can be tailored to suit the end users needs. For one example, Scientific Linux is but one in use at CERN the birthplace of the internet and the home of the Large Hadron Collider, the global collaborative, particle physics research project near Geneva.

The growing list of corporate Linux end users is also indicative of a mature reliable functional operating system originally created in 1991 and now approaching it's late teens. Distrowatch would be the central contact point for the large variety of Linux systems available today. They can all be downloaded freely via HERE

Modern desktop versions of linux these days come with a kitbag of "ready to roll" free softwares and have "easy to use" software package management systems.

At the risk of sounding like an online software salesman and since I'm only a novice keen user with no vested financial interest, I won't say too much more about Linux here but I would like to express a special "thank you" to those many thousands of contributing voluntary members, both men and wowmen of The Free Software Foundation for their hard work and dilligence in developing such a fine range of free community based softwares.

Techie Tip for the IT Hedonists!

The Linux from Scratch Project will provide you with the tools, the instructions and the sourcecode to build your own Computer Operating System. Now you won't get that sort of support opportunity with a proprietory patented system. This particular author built one in 2003 which he christened "GonnaWare", that was a very exciting and educational project for an interested learner. I was pretty much a rank amateur when I started, but came through with a functional working system. So if you are feeling bold or hungry for an IT challenge? then your journey to the outer limits of virtual reality starts right HERE

Current status of the Linux kernel development

What's a kernel you ask? well it's the very heart of an operating system. It get's loaded into your ram chips every time you boot your computer. Just as a peach has a fleshy edible exterior and a kernel (seed) from which an entire new tree can be propogated. Every PC Operating system has one. This is one classic example of the difference between Linux and Windows, the Microsoft one is patented and secret, the linux one is opensource for anyone and everyone capable of reading it or wishing to alter it.
