We must be living in the Age of Software as there's literally mountains of it around for both sale and free. In many cases you will find the free material is quite adequate for the personal computer user.
The global software industry is vibrant and full of evolving ideas, software applications and marketing strategies. There are programmers who develop software under a variety of different licenses including opensource, freeware and commercial. The beauty of some of the free softwares is that you get to try and even continue to use the software for free. If you are happy with it you can always continue to use the free one or you can purchase one of their more premium products.
In the Linux world though 99% of the software is opensource and free, sometimes the authors will "suggest" you make a monitary donation via PayPal, but the choice is yours. When I find a piece of free software that I really like, I generally make a donation that I feel comfortable with and it makes you feel good and it's helps to keep the developer interested too.
